Per-second billing

Also called: 1/1 billing, Billing increment, Per-second rounding

Per-second billing charges a call for the exact seconds it lasted, instead of rounding each call up to the next full minute or block.

Voice providers state their billing increment as two numbers: the minimum charged, then the step after that. Common increments:

  • 60/60: every call is rounded up to the next full minute.
  • 30/30: calls are rounded up to blocks of 30 seconds.
  • 60/1: the first minute is charged in full, then each second.
  • 1/1: each second from the first, with no minimum.

The difference matters most for outbound contact centers, which make many short calls: wrong numbers, quick refusals, voicemail. For a 65-second call at €0.02 per minute, 1/1 billing costs about €0.022, 30/30 costs €0.03 and 60/60 costs €0.04. Over thousands of calls a day, rounding can add a large share to the bill.

When comparing offers, also look for connection fees (a fixed charge per answered call) and minimum call charges, which can outweigh a low per-minute rate.

OVOKY bills voice per second, with no minimum and no connection fee, from a prepaid balance in euros.
